Evacuation Drills
Evacuation Drills help to ensure that your employees and other occupants of your premises know what to do if they need to leave in the event of an emergency. They involve a practice run when your fire alarm is activated and everyone is alerted to the need to leave the building to ensure safety. We help you make sure that the drill is conducted effectively and any necessary lessons are learned.
Legal Obligation and Frequency of Fire Drills
Under Article 15 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has a legal obligation to provide procedures relating to serious and imminent danger These procedures should be supported by the provision of appropriate training and instruction- this includes conducting fire drills.
There is a legal requirement for all non-domestic premises to carry out a fire drill at least annually, although many organisations chose to have more.
The appropriate number of fire drills needed will depend on the type of premises and the nature of the organisation. For example, schools and colleges usually have a fire drill on a termly basis.
Consideration should be given to carrying out more frequent fire drills if:
- Your premises are complex or have high risk factors
- You have high staff turnover or regularly use temporary workers.
- There have been changes to your premises that affect your escape routes.
- You have occupants that are subject to PEEP’s
- There were issues of concern highlighted during the previous fire drill.
- Your staff work different shifts or part time – look at varying the drill time to take account of this.
